Hacks for Curly Hair

Is your curly hair giving you a hard time? It bends, curves and coils, and sometimes it feels like it has a mind of its own. Because of all the twists, it is prone to damage since the natural oils that soften and protect strands have a harder time travelling from the scalp to the ends. What does this mean? Your hair is thirsty! And a proper hair care regimen is the way to go. Here are some of the tips and tricks that will get those curls tamed!

1. Always comb your hair from the bottom up.

Don’t start at the top and yank your way through. Instead, start at the bottom and gently detangle any knots that come your way. When it comes to any hair type, breakage is a big NO-NO, but bear in mind that curly hair is the most fragile type on the block, so be extra careful while detangling it.

2. A wide-tooth comb is your best friend.

Speaking of detangling, your fingers and a wide-tooth comb are a way to go since, let’s face it, – you want to keep as much of the natural curl pattern as you can, and a regular brush will just not do.

3. Use a sulfate-free shampoo.

You don’t want your strands to be stripped, right? That’s where a sulfate-free shampoo comes in handy. We recommend using Pureology’s Curl Complete Shampoo that has a unique, low-lather formula that respects hair fiber’s natural pols and lipids.

4. Trim regularly.

Avoid split ends by getting a quick trim every 6 to 8 weeks and keep those curls bouncy and fresh-looking.

5. Coloured hair needs an extra boost.

If your hair is curly, it’s fragile enough, but if it’s also coloured, then you need to bring in the big guns. We recommend trying Pureology’s Curl Complete Conditioner for colour-treated hair that will smooth out the cuticle while locking in moisture for humidity protection.

6. Keep your curls frizz-free.

If your curls are going through a dull phase or you just want to keep that frizz under control, then a leave-in styling cream is your go-to product. Pureology’s Curl Complete Taming Butter is our favourite! It instantly tames rebellious curls with frizz control, leaving them nice and defined.

How does Redken’s pH-Bonder work?

Let’s face it – we all love experimenting with our hair colour. Whether it’s balayage, platinum blonde, ombré, rainbow hair, or something else, we just can’t get enough of new trends that seem to emerge on a daily basis. One thing all of these trends have in common is the damage that after a while starts to affect the quality of our hair. We’re all familiar with dryness, dullness and split ends, but we’re not always familiar with the best way to protect our hair. Don’t worry, House of Locks has got you covered!

Introducing to you one of our holy grails – Redken’s pH-Bonder Kit that helps protect bonds during technical services to keep fibres strong from within. The pH-Bonder bond-protecting system is perfect for protecting hair from damage while reducing breakage during and after bleaching and colouring services. This 3-step system works from the inside out to promote bond integrity during a lightening or colouring service, and it really makes a difference in keeping your hair in good shape.

First, we start with Bond Protecting Additive which is added to your bleach/colour formula to help protect bonds from within. After rinsing the colour from your hair, we’ll use Fiber Restorative Pre-Wash Concentrate to repair damage and restore the hair fibre for added shine and softness. Last but not least is Post-Service Perfector that should be applied at home once a week prior to shampooing to help maintain your hair’s natural pH and improve elasticity. Say goodbye to a kinky post-bleaching frizzy mess with this breakthrough formula that will do wonders on your hair.

Still not convinced? Don’t take our word for it – stop by our salon and see it for yourself!
